Conservatism is a political philosophy, the term derives from to conserve, from the Latin conservare, "to keep, guard, observe". This is an accurate description of the modern Conservative party - while it is a modern party it respects traditional, established values.
Edmund Burke is sometimes considered the 'father of conservatism' his brand of conservatism is still relevant today - but conservatism does not tend to produce systematic treatises, instead it is less of a political doctrine than a habit of mind, a mode of feeling, a way of living.
Conservatives are often committed to the ideas of neo-liberalism and social neo-conservatism; and traditionally support low taxes, rolling back the power of the state, and defending the civil liberties of the citizens.
